R W Cupp Leslie doesn't give himself enough credit. By the time these recordings were made, he was already a skilled musician and charismatic performer. Listen and hear for yourself! The recordings are intimate: you are there with Leslie as he plays into his cassette recorder at home or at the coffee house. The simple production of the recordings only adds to the album's mystique. But you may regret not having been there to see these performances firsthand.

Carl Salbacka "Heavy Disguise" is always a winner in Medford's hands, but the glockenspiel here really sets this one apart. Favorite track: Heavy Disguise.

It’s me! with 31 minutes of fumbling, altogether unsatisfactory performance! But one has to start somewhere; it’ll be over before you know it, and I *do* think each one of these “scores a charm point or two” as we liked to say in the days of quaint. I wouldn’t share them otherwise.

Barely two years into the adventure of singing-whilst-playing-guitar, I was writing stuff, learning songs off records, beginning to play in public, and sometimes being recorded doing these things...well, such recordings that survive are completely haphazard and practically random. Using a cassette dictaphone of my father’s I would sometimes record myself playing something I learned that day, before I could really play it…then never record it when I *could* play it passably well! And these wonderful "covers" I attempted in public were often tantalizingly just beyond my grasp, with nerves further bamboozling my efforts. But I was a nervy novice, and I kept pushing on. I hope many who saw me perform in 1982 would remember me as being better than this, (haha!) and will project onto *this* half hour good vibes still reverberating from my best intentions, my better performances, and my joy in playing for you.

about

LESLIE MEDFORD Oakland, California

Leslie Medford is a dude from a world that no longer exists! The two bands he led 1984-1991 have their own bandcamp pages under The Ophelias and HighHorse. Medford was a busy fellow during his pro period (1982-1992) and this site covers solo things & side projects from as early as 1975 and as recent as 2004.There is tremendous variety here, of a high standard of idea, if not always execution.Enjoy! ... more
