NO PERFECT LOVE [by James Wright]

I looked all around at the faces in the crowd and thought "this is the time to be heading home." The smoke will still rise and the bright lights will shine like black tarmac angels reflect in chrome. I looked all around at the people in my life and felt now there is love where once was none. Faces will change all the stories and the games, like icicles glare in the winter sun.

No perfect love in this far from perfect place.
You gaze into the water till the ripples melt your face.
Walking from the summer sands into the winter's fire...

I shook my head and I headed for the door, I thought "no quick way out of this danger zone." The fur will still fly and the dark eyes will shine in the night when the hunter kills alone. I breath the solid air of the summer evening town. I'll fire upon love living under the gun. For lies upon dreams like all you'd ever want, rumors of first sight or love on the run.

She pushed me too far and I took it with a smile. I tasted sugar and spice and bitter old wine. Like once upon a time, long, long ago, I made the right choices by luck or design. I listened to the night - all the magic in the street - I thought, "this is the time to be leaving home." Tasting the dust of the road beneath my feet I'll quench on the rain to the dry, dry bone.
